This was what I had posted more than a year ago about the Japanese movie, Confessions.

I first saw the movie after skimming through different cable channels then tumbling upon it at Screen Red Asia. I’m a big fan of East Asian movies that piquing interest on this movie was not an issue but what really got my interest was the overall tone of the movie.  The movie has already started and had been playing  for a couple of minutes. From that scene, I understood that the movie was set on a high school but what was unsettling was the color palette,  it was dark. It was a movie with what I may first distinguished as children with the scenes that are heavy, aside from overtly dramatic but also on an angry, horrific, and murderous way. I could really sense a horror aura, well, maybe as experienced from watching The Grudge or The Ring. But then, the movie proved to be horrific minus those white entities. Horrific of the idea that the said plot could really/have happen/ed.

The movie starts and end with Teacher Yoko Moriguchi played by Takako Matsu.  She started the with a sad soft announcement and ending it with a indurated laughter.

Technically saying (Pardon me, I’m No EXPERT!), the story was well weaved with the  movie. The actors and actresses played their characters so well that I greatly sympathized with them. I cried when they feel the need to cry. I feel frustrated when they were eaten by frustration. I greatly wonder what puts them at those situations giving a wider perspective, a greater sense of open-mindedness. The overall plot movement was so appropriate, so  mysterious, so intimidating, so dark but still puts its audience with awe and wonder. Different forms of psychological trauma were its main plot.

The movie was like a trial with the Teacher as the main prosecutor aiming to look for evidence to  implicate (or find justice) those culpable. She wants to understand why things had happened and she wants people to be responsible of that. She wants to teach the pain that she had felt for this prosecutor does not intend to jail anyone physically but to imprison them emotionally. She was just a bystander that became the innocent victim. Eventually, the incident made her more plotting and vengeful.

I cannot speak with morality because each characters has been played by their emotions that I have never experienced and would never commend but weirdly, I find to understand. Help should have been greatly yielded during the right times. Intention should be cleared for sincerity is always questioned for those people  broken.

One would not likely accustom  with children killing even with the fads like Chuckie, the doll. Still, even with the rare instances of real-life child killers (Crime Channel’s Killer Kids). The action itself is not something that could be normed. But then, it really still feels unlikely for these innocent people to do the action alone, with their young mind controlling what they could actually do.. The adults shoulder the greater part of the problem. “Cause as witness from that movie, things happened through ignorance.

The movie tells a message. More especially on first world societies like Japan. With their Baby Boomers working their ass off to provide better for their families, children’s mind are at stake with the kind of attention and treatment that are left provided. The good intention pays dearly if guided well.

So far, I have watched the movie thrice and it never fails to make me feel what a heavy heart could children feel with negligence and without that proper guidance. It creates a domino, usually unstoppable at the right moment.

DISCLAIMER: this is not a recap nor has any synopsis. this is more of a review, a rant, to a drama that could have been more…

this is a drama that started with a light tone and moved on to getting darker and darker for every new episode. i am actually writing this post because i was very much affected upon how the drama turned out. i felt pain, unsatisfaction, and cheated. i actually can’t figure out why (i’ve felt that way) or maybe because of my great wonder of how EPIC (in all sense) the love story was. especially after knowing that this story may have happened in reality and was just blurred or burned in Korea’s history. SPOILER!!!!!

i could say that the ending was a happy one but  i am not satisfied, not with the ending, but of how the story went out. you get what i mean? (to those who have watched already) i have that lingering feeling that there are issues left out or that things should not have gone that way.

the writing was not the problem but more of the morality of it. i surmised that their world was of an endless struggle that is  so much like normal lives. but the story had more, in a sense, about life, death, greed, pain and revenge. like how a drama should be, it was very dramatic.

all the characters were interesting and flawed more because of how they reacted or/and affected by the actions of the people around them. very human! one should commend the writer for writing characters that has an impact on every other characters’ lives. no character were used simply as an extra. they made an impact. they were memorable and for some, they were lasting.

but what hurts me was with how the story unfolded to be just about one great tragic love. a love that sprouted from a wrong start to their supposed lasting happy ending. all the other people were used as instruments upon how this love could be tested,  challenged, and ‘survived’. the couple in-love are also bounded by their emotional and political ties. i could say that these two people have the most convincing love among all the other dramas I’ve watched. their love knows no boundaries even death and hatred and I was greatly affected with the selfish ending of living ‘dead’. it was like they should have done that from the start but then their love with each would not be strengthened and the individual maturity would not come at bay. making me feel that the story was really just about them. i was cheated because after writing those good supporting characters the story would just end with them. there might have been a change but the deaths that happened was just in vain. it was necessary for the story to move or maybe, as a reminder, upon how cruel this world is. relationships (familial, friendships, etc) were severed for this love.

i finished the whole 24-episodes with no skips nor fast forwards in just two days proving how engaging the series was.  i did not care much about the acting for the story and the music itself was enough to convince me of their ‘acting.’ the costumes were never an eyesore and very much appropriate. well, the hanboks were beautiful. as implied, the OST was timed well with all scenes. KUDOS to its musical director and of course the composers and singers! the music plus the acting really brought out all of this post’s feelings.

but the after taste, was not engaging. if you ask, ‘if i’ll watch it again,’ i might think for awhile and answer, ‘maybe just all the lovely scenes.’  ill skip the killings. overall, if you want a historical intrigue, long-haired Park Shi Hoo, and a convincing love story. watch this drama, and witness their reality for yourself.

Shinigami no Seido: HONTO!

After more than a year of looking for english subs, i finally stumbled it at dramacrazy. actually, i’m just about to watch so i’ll tell more later. for now, watch the trailer first and be enthralled.

Case Sensitive: Impressions

It was around 10pm when I stumbled into screen red asia. A chinese movie was being played.

I first saw Ady An crying asking for help. It seems that she was being held hostage then came a man who helped her. They seem to not know each other. The guy asked if her name is Lu Xiao Ni. Ady told otherwise. He tells her that he is an avid viewer of Ady’s blog. He’s saying that he saw what was happening and came to the area to rescue her.  Instead of being thankful, she said that everything is staged and complaining that the man even knocked the camera down so no videos were recorded. Then, she asked where is her boyfriend, wondering why she can’t see him. She walks inside the kitchen and saw her boyfriend lying with his own blood. She was mourning with her boyfriend’s death while the man was contemplating what’s really happening. He killed someone whom he thought an assailant and now he’s a murderer. Ady An, now realizing she is with a murderer, screamed “You killed my boyfriend.” Then frantically, she attacked the guy and then the guy just overpower her and next scene. It was a cop talking with someone about certain videos. Ady An now is being held hostage by the guy who’s name is Li Bao Bao. He was actually more known as a poet but now sells things through an online shop.

In this house, like other hostage stories, the next scenes showed Ady’s trials in escaping. Most scenes are in Li Bao Bao’s basement. Answering…
How she screamed her lungs out asking for someone to help her? How he used all the videos he’d watched to treat and threaten her claiming to know many things about her? How his ex-wife came and she was then given a chance to asked helped online? How no one believed that video for someone exposed that everything they’re doing is acting? How then they talked about their childhood, their lost, their lives? How she cried in front of a camera retelling her life aches? How they seem to be happy with each other and even had a dinner? How she seduced the man until she stabbed his fingers with a knife? How she was already among the crowd of internet users yet no one is believing her for everyone is thinking it was all staged? How they went back to his home after that scene at the internet cafe? How the guy intoxicate himself with a liquefied gas tank? How she is now free from him and tried to slit his neck? How then the investigator came from earlier and now she’s not believing he’s indeed a cop? How she eventually came into term’s with the cop’s reality? And then how the man told her, “Wo Ai Ni. No one is going to believed you. why did you do this to the only man who believed the real you?”

The movie depicted a cycle of trust between these two people.

it’s scary watching a movie when you don’t know what’s the real emotions between and of the characters. also, the plot is twisted. battered people are everywhere! the movie was more about making these people commit murder. people not seeing the fake from reality because people already established that fake as reality. what is acting without the trust of your audience? now it’s her turn. acting made their minds not see their reality. how ironic it is that the only one who believed your reality became what your mind won’t accept as a memory. things becoming more traumatic.

(also, they’re making me standby with my sexuality.) i’ll be always fantasizing them. (lee sung min is not on the list for he’s my soul’s crush. ???)

yes, he’s in the military right now. i’m trying hard to graduate before he’s discharged. my thing for him started with 1%. see the pun. it’s intended. he’s really a versatile actor. one you can respect and adore. it’s like treating him like a demigod. you’re like an idol that is really a million million miles away.

maybe i’m crushing this man for he’s around my age. or girls, can’t you most agree, it’s his SMILE. one smile and you’re bought. i’m looking forward in seeing him more in love rain. maybe when this show ends, this will end also. but it’ll start again with his new role, grr.. fangirl mode!! ^^

capitalism at its best..

i haven’t watched the movie but i intend to do so.
this incident has not only happened in India but it’s happening around the world.
but i could attest that this is one of the most heartbreaking.
with children, elderly, slowly losing their lives.
and at the same time fighting off with their chance to be able to live in this world.

the VOICE maybe not what everyone has but collectively this can make a greater change.
not only for them.
but also to each of our own community.

let’s not make more movies like this.
or more aptly let’s not allow these kind of scenarios to turn into books or movies, before it can make any sense to anyone.

proactivity.

situations may turn into cycle.
but i should be a progressive cycle.
with everyone supporting each one’s progress.

our problems shouldn’t be the same problem of the future.
see thru the root of all problems.
for one it’s uprooted, we could start with a new one.

i can surmise that the problems of this world could not be solved in an instant.
and these challenges may be needed to make this world move.
but there wouldn’t be any movement if we’ll just allow to dwell on the problems and not really solve any of it.

let’s not only cry but also whine, move and fight.
let’s have the change.

Mainstreaming Reality

During my first stay in the dormitory, I get to experience large-scale General Assemblies with more than a hundred attendees. One way or another, it would start with discussing what to do for a certain event, then presenting budget and expenditures, and at some point a somewhat educational discussion about certain situations in the university and in the country. For the past months, I have experienced same methods but in one occasion, things worked out differently when it was postponed until about thirty minutes past nine to cater the nightly dose of Mara Clara. At that time, it seems funny with people engaging religiously for one show.

Then I was introduced to the word, Edutainment, a portmanteau of the combined words of education and entertainment. When I first heard of it, I thought of all the documentaries I saw during late night. Yes, late night! Most people do not get the chance in watching this and they may not serve entertaining but really they are, especially when it is telling a brighter story.

Then, I saw the produced videos of Puntos Organization from Nicaragua. It gave me a fresh idea upon what/how a mainstream show could do/should be done. Although at start, I was only witnessing a drama played by people that is for most Filipino audience (sadly) would be quite peculiar. For one, they were acted by what seems like ordinary people. They do not wear glamour clothes, or for some blatant comments, have glamour faces. The production was presenting fast-paced and direct-to-the point scenarios upon what are the real lingering issues in their impoverished state. The show spanned for almost five years tackling the lives of two children. As they grow older, they encountered different situations, meet new friends, and gave a clearer and better lens upon the lives of these new people from the discriminations, their social functions, sexuality, and violence.

The show was commending for it competed in the games of the mainstream with their players gaining much recognition from the public. The movement’s cause may have been sensationalized but at least they have been heard and recognized nationally and even internationally. It endured and flourished the positive effects of their movements. Expanding to other fields of nightly talk shows, youth leadership camps, school visits, among others. The spiral of silence was contradicted gaining much attention on minor issues and reinforcing it to the mainstream. The movement is backed up by diffusion of innovations theory, in which it started with one advocacy and in the process it innovated into different kind of other channels.

The movement aimed precisely. The youth was their main audience and the television as their main medium. These two complement each other for a country that sees (I think during that time) television as the cultivating means to a great source of news and entertainment. The organization presented the audience the kind of reality that they should not turn to. It gave them different options upon how to deal or how to avoid those kinds of situations. Following the social learning theory of Bandura, the audience could or would identify themselves with the characters of the drama knowing that they were also like them, living an ordinary life. It was like a kind of a kind of a cry, a kind of a call, a kind of prevention, or a kind of taking things into action. It was nice that they see that foremost root of societal problems starts with the issues of youth. As their title suggest, (Sex to Sentido), they put the taboo issues related to sex to the senses of their audience. They gave their audience an option.

While the effects in our country, given with such shows (Mara Clara) would be contrasting. For I think, these shows in our country may have cultivated through the stereotyping of realities as wanted by the capitalists. It would be hard to start a bandwagon like that of the sentidos. For the country has capitalized more on the trends and marketing of an international market than that that of the nation’s pride. It undermines the values of reality giving a somewhat better or an escaped reality wherein miracles are always bound to happen and success could be achieved through inheritance and greed. Yes, they are entertaining but the lessons stays with the show and never get through most of the daily lives. It ends there.

As for the theme of the Sentidos, “We’re different. We’re equal,” it suggests that the movement recognized a somewhat rights-based approach on answering the problems of their society. Setting that although they are unique in every way, they all have equal rights.

prejudices on the pride book

“In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” (Mr. Darcy to Ms. Bennet)

This was one of the few lines, I dearly remembered from that 300-page book. I finally finished reading it during my field work stay. I actually first attempted reading it seven years ago but I stopped along Ms. Bennet’s prejudices. It was a very boring book with she always thinking how mean Mr. Darcy and his friends were, how agreeable circumstances should be, etc. After I finished it, I felt good for the good ending, I feel cleared but I didn’t feel any satisfaction. But it was indeed boring. Maybe I shouldn’t tried something something too classic for my taste (Shakespeares, Hugos, Austens). It’s my fault. I tried understanding a language, although having the familiar words, but with different contexts. I was actually seeing the words and input the ones my brain collectively understand. I was tired with Bennet’s overly perception (worries). At the end, I was actually in doubt if she has pure feelings towards Mr. Darcy. Why? Practically his house changed her mind and of course the embarrassment. It was not what I had expected of a natural feeling of an unknown attraction. (Am I too enclosed with this idea?) I was also tired with Mr. Darcy’s non-action and arrogance. I was actually tired of the plot that it seems to feel like a forever waiting. A waiting for interactions to happen between the two lead characters. I think they only have less than five encounters. Also, it seems that ladies at that time were like flowers, waiting to be picked or wilted. But there was an element of timing in doing that, and you need to have that perfect chance. I think the story could be written in a good fifty pages with a third person narrating all of it and it will tackle everything.

On the positive, I actually learned a thing a or two. (Is it so westernized to actually look for moral lessons?) There was the setting’s history and culture, where men and women coincidentally meet and then marry. It gave me a feel of an 1800 England. The books also give me sweet chills. The statement above was I think the sweetest among all dialogues. It was like a sweet surrender.

I could really also surmise that both were perceptive characters and I can relate to that. Thinking gives you choices. It’s downside when you do it too much. I read it when I was actually living a hundred kilometers away from my comfort zone. I was always thinking of things that I could or should be doing while living in a unknown family (community).

Reading became a great pleasure during my stay.

Hanazakari no Kimitachi e

Hana Kimi SP is out.

Though the series was a little exaggerating. The series never fails to make me laugh (really hard!). All those guys were skinny hotties. The “battle royale” scenes was really hilarious. My stomach and heart were attacked. (ano ba yan ang hirap mag-english!?)

Story and entertainment wise, this version was far better. The story may seem unrealistic but each episodes tells something. It was not a story about poverty but still makes you dream and hope about life. Something to do about friendship and pure happiness. It also has the tendency to make you forget and realize something.

It’s just sad that it has now officially ended. They officially graduated. But,I would want to watch the whole series again.

(p.s. also to Nodame, what i love with most romance genre jdoramas is that they are not focusing much on a certain couple. Should I say that they make all characters have parts or make me,as a fan, feel that the series is not all about two people but also all about the characters in that series.)
